SEMH Sessions
Our social, emotional and mental health specialist teacher works with students individually or in small groups and offers a range of programmes, which include:
Emotional literacy: Students learn more about the difference between emotions and feelings. We work on growing their word bank to describe their emotions, e.g. What type of anger are you? Frustrated, annoyed, cross or mad? We look at how our behaviour is a way we express what we feel and how this can impact others. Discussions about expected/helpful behaviours compared to unexpected/unhelpful. Learning about different perspectives and understanding other people's points of view. We also look at categorising problems according to their size, and we aim to learn to respond to problems with the same size reaction (over-reactions). Finally, we look at strategies that students can use when experiencing emotions that will help them manage their feelings better.
Anger Management: This is done on a one-to-one basis as anger is different for every student. We spend time learning about their anger and the triggers. Their response to things when they are angry. Talking about specific situations that resulted in a reaction. Time is allocated to try new strategies to manage situations that can lead to an anger outburst and, while we do this, students can come to me to discuss their feelings at any time. This programme can take a bit longer and is dependent on the individual students.
Anxiety: Students get to learn about the chemistry of anxiety and how this shows itself within them. We look at their symptoms, how they feel when they are anxious. We look at different activities that support preventing anxiety from building up, but we also look at activities that support managing anxiety in the moment. Again, students are given time to practise different strategies.
Resilience: Students work through different activities to identify resilience, build resilience and develop a growth mind-set. Looking at a solution-focused mind-set, grit and flexibility.
Social skills: This programme has 5 workshops, each specifically designed with activities that allow us to discuss topics around and directly linked to the main workshop focus. The different workshops are: Communication, Relationships, Building up, Impulses and Empathy.
Students will attend a workshop/session once a week for between 5 and 7 weeks, depending on the programme.
In addition to the above, we also offer shorter programmes on mindfulness, self-esteem, stress-management and bullying. Some of the shortened programme materials are covered in the longer programmes.
